Ever since YouTube was first got wind of when it went live it was always going to be a success from the start, I mean I think the idea for a website like YouTube is genius, of courses there's similar video uploading sites out there on the internet but YouTube is just unique than the rest! Mainly because of it brand name, but im sure many of you have spent time just randomly browsing YouTube and then realising what the hell am I actually looking for? The fact that it's also a good website to kill time at work or in school is probably also why people like it, and the fact that the website is blocked in schools so much!
But it's obviously not a surprise if someone told you that YouTube is addictive, because im sure we have all been on YouTube and spent much more time on the website than you thought you ever would (I know I have!) but if you think about it, YouTube has several stages and levels of addiction, and I think they go something like this:
Level 1. The beginning of your addiction:
You found yourself bored and instead of turning on the TV you decided to go on YouTube
Level 2. Your addiction has developed and you've come back for more!:
You've came back the website, but have no idea why your there and start searching for random videos
Level 3. You've been visiting the site for at least 2 + more hours a day:
Visiting YouTube has become something of a daily routine of your website activity!
Level 4. You've started subscribing to people, and keep up to date with there channel:
You now think "I like what this person is saying, im going to subscribe him" thats when you've hit level 4!
Level 5. When you finally go out a buy a video camera and start a vLog and share your views with the world:
You've decided that you want to get a piece of the vLog action and go and buy a video camera and start sharing your points/views on whatever you want to talk about with the rest of the world. Thats when you know you've hit the top level of YouTube addiction!
Level 6. YouTube Celebrity:
You have become a YouTube celebrity and you have 10,000 + subscribers, all of your fans worship you as some god, and your videos are getting hits of about 1,000,000 +. Thats when you know you've hit that Celebrity status on YouTube.
(If anyone gets to level 6, you have no life. Sorry)
So why is it that addictive?
OKay so I've pointed out that YouTube is very addictive but I guess it's nothing to be ashamed of im sure most of us are at least at level 2 now, if not maybe higher. But why is it so god damn addictive? Myself I think it's because the video catergories are so vast in size that you can easily find something that you want, I mean you get some really random crap videos that appear that have had like 1 view in the past 10 months but is YouTube becoming a alternative to entertainment? I mean inside of watching some program on the TV are we all slowly converting ourselfs to watching entertainment on YouTube?
I've also noticed that YouTube is one of the best work activities if the boss is being a arse and you have decided that your not going to do any work today, so you go onto YouTube to get your fix! Yes YouTube is now a drug now, it's addictive like various substances but you'll soon be able to download it into your body to get your fix of it! Just don't overdose on the downloading otherwise your body might crash!
So if YouTube's become part of our culture should we let it? I say why the hell not, It's a website providing entertainment for the world, and it's great for work if you don't actually want to do any work, and even better at schools! Yeah this comes from experience now. YouTube at school best thing ever. Except when the teachers find out and add YouTube to the block list (Then we just use proxy's lol..) and to be honest school internet generally sucks and takes about 5 mins just to buffer and load a 40 second video, but if you need a website for word avoidance YouTube's the website for it!
