If you know me well, then you should defiantly know that I am a metal head who likes anything metal, because it's bloody awesome and the world would be a better place if we all listened to metal. Of course music is very opinionated and there will be many that disagree with my opinion, thats okay, no hard feelings, but of course with the music I like comes genres of music that absolutely dispise (With great intensity) and they include Rap, Indie, R & B and loads more, basically anything thats not metal. Because I just find it hard to relate to them. But that doesn't mean I don't respect them! Ever music genre is different and everyone is entitled to like and dislike different genres. A interesting (Not really interesting to me) but a fairly new genre of music thats hit our nation is dubstep and is based off from the genre of music called garage and although I don't like it. I recongise it as a music genre, but just I don't think I'll ever like it. You may be thinking then why the hell are you posting about Dubstep then? Well the whole inspriation from this post started with a conflict in the common room as Sixth form (Or college however you want to see it as)
I can't really claim to know dubstep as I don't like it but I can give you the insight of it involves electronic eqiumpment such as a synthesiser (Sorry If I spelt it wrong) and other electrical equimpment, to create dubstep you also can use computer software. Dubstep is becoming quite popular if you look on sites such as MySpace you'll see many rising dubstep artists, not that I know much as im not interested in it. But it's a rising music genre none the less.
Hopefully from my poor explaination you get the basis of this so called music genre. However many people like this sort of stuff and thats fine, I mean we're all different and so we should be diverise, but the problem I have with dubstep is that many people claim to be able to create it and Im trying not to bash but with all the computer software and stuff it's not exactly that hardest object to achieve seems you have alot of computer stuff to help you. You can tell that some of the sounds are done on a computer when you listen to dubstep through a standard speaker system, after a certain point you'll notice that the sound is starting to slowly distort (When there is no distortion present on the track) especially when you turn the volume up, eventually the bass will be too much for a normal speaker system thats not equipped for it and the sound will start to sound really quite bad. But Im not forgetting that yes there are some good dubstep artists out there and although I don't listen to it by choice, I've listened to it before and sometimes there are some good beats in tracks and it's understandable why people like it, due to the rythmn that a track has. Here's just a random example of some dubstep, if anyone has any better artists post them and I'll add them to the post:
Now unforchently to me dubstep is just noise, mostly just random noises and effects that seems to be very similar in many tracks, but yes it's music none the less. Me I prefer playing my electric guitar (Which is probably half ironic but anyway) In my eyes playing guitar is much better than making music using eqipment like a synthesiser (I don't know if im even spelling that right) or computer software, called me old fashioned but I much prefer performing things like pinch harmonics (or screams) on my electric guitar but you can use things like pedals to create effects that are similar to dubstep effect in tracks so I guess I have to say thanks to whole electronic era for pedals in the guitar industry.
I guess me writing all this is because me and a load of friends have this debate on a daily basis at college (Sixth form) basically in our common room we have a stereo hooked up to a okayish speaker system and basically if you have a Ipod or MP3 player you can connect it up to it and play the music on the ipod or MP3 player plugged in, of course the metal heads are heavy out numbered to the likes of the indie folk, but whenever we get the chance to put our music on we always get it immediately turned off or at best get about two songs before someone else unplugs it. But this really annoys me and other people because we'd just had to listen to dubstep for about 30 mins previously. When you don't like a music genre, it's hard to listen to it, but the none the less I and other people bare it. Granted we may have a few moments of "For fuck sake this is shit" but we bare it enough. But when the stereo is free we put some of our metal on, but almost instantly get it turned off and get the lame excuse of "Thats just noise" and then someone else puts more dubstep on and now we're in the same cycle as we we're 30 mins ago. Now no offence to dubstep artists, fans etc. But I could just say that about dubstep right? Granted Metal is more brutal and heavy but there both classed as "noise" I mean in the common room on thursday afternoon we had a confrontation about the whole dubstep and metal thing. I tried to be civilised and explain but eventually it just turned into "Metal is shit" etc etc.. So I guess thats why im posting it here because I wasn't able to present the case in this way (Well this article so far is over a 1000 words and wtf is this a debate?!? lol)
I think the problem is, that there are much more dubstep fans in the sixth form than metal fans, so already out numbered and on the back foot so to speak but usually in the afternoons when there is barely anyone in, and a couple of friends and I have a free period we usually get chance to play metal. But the amount of grim faces we get, even from staff members of the sixth form is quite funny. I don't know what there stance on dubstep would be but I'd probably guess they'd prefer dubstep on the grounds of "It's just horrible noise" im really getting tired of that excuse because it's really not valid, if someone was to expand on it then I'd happily listen. Another problem is probably the ignorance of everyone and myself included, im not trying to sound like the good guy here because all of us are slightly ignorant to music we don't like, but can't you blame me if I have to listen to dubstep for like an hour, then when I get my chance to plug in my own iPod I get it instantly taken out and throw back at me because some other dubstep fan didn't like metal. Surely dubstep fans you can sympathise with me and say thats not fair? Seems I just had to their music!
Here is my addition to the original post (Updated 25th February 2009):
Okay so I've got over 20 comments on this post and expected like 5 at the max. This article is on page three of google and I didn't even do anything special to get this article that much notice. I've been getting alot of comments recently about similar points (Which I thank anyone who has posted one) This article was just literally a half rant about how music taste clashes at our common room. I don't like dubstep obviously, but I've managed to piss off alot of people, which I guess I can't say was my intention when I submitted this article but it happened and im not particularly bothered.
First off all I removed a comment about electronic music not being music at all. I aplogise to everyone, as I offended alot of people I was annoyed that day (Not just about dubstep as that would be just plain said) but about other things and shouldn't of attacked like that. Sorry dubstep fans <3 but continue reading on to hear my comments on your opionions on other parts of the article I posted
Let me try and go from the top to all your comments and points you made and reply to them:
The Electric Guitar is old fashioned
Alright I admit it. Yes it is. Electronic technology now is way ahead of the guitar and other instruments but this doesn't make the guitar obselete. Some people like the old style instruments
You are a ignorant bitch:
Thanks, alot of you have called me ignorant, thats fine it's your opinion, the point seems to get across to seems the majority of commenters are Dubstep fans. But I'll think you'll find that some dubstep fans are ignorant towards metal and other types of music. So you know im no worse than many other people out there
You are a nerd have no life so you just post pathetic arguments all day:
First off this was never meant to be an argument it was just some half rant that I formed one wednesday evening if it was an argument then I would actually of taken it seriously. Second have you had a look at the other content I post here? This is my blog where I post loads of things. I'll show you:
In total there are five posts catergories as rants:
http://www.james-blogs.com/category/rants/
Meanwhile my blog also is a place where I post tutorials on website development and I have currently just over 25 tutorials:
http://www.james-blogs.com/category/tutorials/
The ratio for tutorials to rants is just about 5:1. So it shows what I spend alot of time on. Not posting "pathetic" rants but put it that way. I also post much more stuff but tutorials alone, kind of debunk this claim. Sorry to go all nerdy on explaining it, but it needed to be shown to you all.
I spin dubstep, but also like to play metal
Let me end one of the points that keeps trailing on. I have no problem with the person who likes dubstep lets get that out right now, I simply hate the genre not the person. It's good that people who like dubstep also like other types of music, metal included. I have no problem with it. I only get annoyed when people who like dubstep when they call metal and other music genre's "shit" "crap" etc. And to be honest this post started when most of the dubstep fans in our common room kept constantly turning off our music after we have been subjected to their music for the past 30 mins and calling crap etc. A little unfair, and if you had this done to you you wouldn't like it, would you? Overtime I've gotten use to dubstep in the common room but thats not to say I like it. But hopefully you can understand one persons annoyance over that.
Your are Elitist
This was one of the few comments that actually got to me personally. As when people reply I like to be constructive and not start slagging match, be civilised etc, you can call me names such as emo, pussy gay whatever but this it just makes me half not bother about replying to your comment seriously, because hey im making the effort to present my case to you. But none the less I got called Elitist. I am no way Elitist I grew up in a typical family until I was like 5 when my parents split up, but not that changed anything, I went to normal state schools and would prefer them to Private schools any day! Personally, I don't like private schools as I think buying a better education has serious problems and I would go as far to say we should get rid of Private Schools (But im not going to into that). In actual fact I study Socialogy at A Level and we covered Education and look at indepth of Secondary Modern schools and private schools. By the end of it I hated private schools more than ever!
Well thats my little addition to the comments I've been getting recently. Sorry I didn't post it in actual comment but in total thats about 500 words, so it would be one long ass comment to read! And for a heads up if you read from top to bottom you've just read over 2000 words, sorry if I wasted your time, but thanks for reading the article fully.

Sadly even though I have my own iPod with headphones if I tried to listen to my own music in the common room at sixth form it would be drowned out by dubstep.
Look this is my blog where I post various things. In actual fact I posted this as sort of a way to let of steam. Not to create some internet war/argument, but looks like everyone here has decided to make it into one so what can you do. I think it's fair to say I've been very accepting of the name calling that I've had thrown at me, judgement of my personality etc but not once have I called anyone a name back.
You should contact iPod about your "DubPod" it would most defiantly catch on lol.
See some people have gotten it into there heads that im being some defender of the metal music genre, while it may seem that way. I just posted this one wednesday evening to let of some steam and share it with others. But no a person can't do this anymore without being verbally destroyed. It's sad really and to be honest if im just going to get continues hate im just going to remove this article (Which yeah you all will be glad about) but Im getting really annoyed with the same points all the time and im fed of it really, and you may be thinking why did you post this in the first place then. Well because I simply stated my opinion and just let of some steam, but now apparently this is some music war.
And again I replied to someone who said the similar thing about being me Emo.
"Oh, and you're definitely an emo. Just the way you write, using shitty things like XD and <3, only willy sniffers do that."
You claim to know my personality by one photo, this article and two commonly used internet characters "xD" and "<3" sorry but you fail there.
But hey at least you structured your comment and stated why you said those things, which I thank you for. Because comments like "Ur a wasteman" im just going to ignore.

you can't say that about dupstep whilst not taking time to fully research the topic to be disscussed. And anyway, the 'dubstep' in the sixth form is piss-poor. hence why i don't roll in there. stupid chavs with their mainstream shit.

Most music lovers do not stick to one genre. I for example listen to dubstep, grime, d'n'b, roots reggae, dancehall, ska, various forms of rock, metal and hip-hop. My honest advice for you is to listen to all kinds of music, you never know, you may grow to find something you enjoy even more than metal.

Luckily for you, and unluckily for the rest of us, dubstep is a trend at the moment and the people who like it will probably be a minority in 10 years time, whilst metalheads have been in the minority for a long time and probably will be for a long time. Therefore, you're always going to annoy those into a current music trend when you put your metal on... and to be fair, I don't know anyone who feels that metal is okay. Seems like a bit of a marmite thing haha.
On a serious note though, if these people are upset by your music choices, try to find some common ground. When I'm with my friends, I wouldn't dream of putting on something I know most of them wouldn't appreciate. Therefore, instead of going for the, I don't know Pete Seeger or Blind Lemon Jefferson (which, though fantastic, probably aren't loved by most people my age on first listen), I go for the something I know that we will all enjoy, such as a bit of reggae, Jurrasic 5 or some liquid DnB. Just so you know, I'm most into folk, blues, reggae, ska, rocksteady and drum and bass (althogh it changes all the time).
I suggest you try to find some common ground with your friends, so that next time you share your music with your friends, try to put something on that you think they will appreciate. And be more open minded with your music tastes, always be on the look out for things you haven't heard. Ask your parents for suggestions (no joke!). That way, your might be less inclined to think of you as the "metalhead", and more as a cool guy with good taste in music. You never know, after a while they might find themselves more receptive to your beloved metal =)

***when I said i don't know anyone who thinks metal is "okay", I meant I know people who love it and people who hate it and that seems to be about it! No offence meant.

It's cool bro, longer time since anyone has commented, tbh the people I mentioned in this, aren't friends at all. Just fellow people in sixth form, while I know there names, not really friends with them. Your suggestion is basically what has happened over the years, but now a days I find myself being in the common room less and less, so it's not much of a problem anyway. Thank you for your comment.
