If you know me well, then you should defiantly know that I am a metal head who likes anything metal, because it's bloody awesome and the world would be a better place if we all listened to metal. Of course music is very opinionated and there will be many that disagree with my opinion, thats okay, no hard feelings, but of course with the music I like comes genres of music that absolutely dispise (With great intensity) and they include Rap, Indie, R & B and loads more, basically anything thats not metal. Because I just find it hard to relate to them. But that doesn't mean I don't respect them! Ever music genre is different and everyone is entitled to like and dislike different genres. A interesting (Not really interesting to me) but a fairly new genre of music thats hit our nation is dubstep and is based off from the genre of music called garage and although I don't like it. I recongise it as a music genre, but just I don't think I'll ever like it. You may be thinking then why the hell are you posting about Dubstep then? Well the whole inspriation from this post started with a conflict in the common room as Sixth form (Or college however you want to see it as)
I can't really claim to know dubstep as I don't like it but I can give you the insight of it involves electronic eqiumpment such as a synthesiser (Sorry If I spelt it wrong) and other electrical equimpment, to create dubstep you also can use computer software. Dubstep is becoming quite popular if you look on sites such as MySpace you'll see many rising dubstep artists, not that I know much as im not interested in it. But it's a rising music genre none the less.
Hopefully from my poor explaination you get the basis of this so called music genre. However many people like this sort of stuff and thats fine, I mean we're all different and so we should be diverise, but the problem I have with dubstep is that many people claim to be able to create it and Im trying not to bash but with all the computer software and stuff it's not exactly that hardest object to achieve seems you have alot of computer stuff to help you. You can tell that some of the sounds are done on a computer when you listen to dubstep through a standard speaker system, after a certain point you'll notice that the sound is starting to slowly distort (When there is no distortion present on the track) especially when you turn the volume up, eventually the bass will be too much for a normal speaker system thats not equipped for it and the sound will start to sound really quite bad. But Im not forgetting that yes there are some good dubstep artists out there and although I don't listen to it by choice, I've listened to it before and sometimes there are some good beats in tracks and it's understandable why people like it, due to the rythmn that a track has. Here's just a random example of some dubstep, if anyone has any better artists post them and I'll add them to the post:
Now unforchently to me dubstep is just noise, mostly just random noises and effects that seems to be very similar in many tracks, but yes it's music none the less. Me I prefer playing my electric guitar (Which is probably half ironic but anyway) In my eyes playing guitar is much better than making music using eqipment like a synthesiser (I don't know if im even spelling that right) or computer software, called me old fashioned but I much prefer performing things like pinch harmonics (or screams) on my electric guitar but you can use things like pedals to create effects that are similar to dubstep effect in tracks so I guess I have to say thanks to whole electronic era for pedals in the guitar industry.
I guess me writing all this is because me and a load of friends have this debate on a daily basis at college (Sixth form) basically in our common room we have a stereo hooked up to a okayish speaker system and basically if you have a Ipod or MP3 player you can connect it up to it and play the music on the ipod or MP3 player plugged in, of course the metal heads are heavy out numbered to the likes of the indie folk, but whenever we get the chance to put our music on we always get it immediately turned off or at best get about two songs before someone else unplugs it. But this really annoys me and other people because we'd just had to listen to dubstep for about 30 mins previously. When you don't like a music genre, it's hard to listen to it, but the none the less I and other people bare it. Granted we may have a few moments of "For fuck sake this is shit" but we bare it enough. But when the stereo is free we put some of our metal on, but almost instantly get it turned off and get the lame excuse of "Thats just noise" and then someone else puts more dubstep on and now we're in the same cycle as we we're 30 mins ago. Now no offence to dubstep artists, fans etc. But I could just say that about dubstep right? Granted Metal is more brutal and heavy but there both classed as "noise" I mean in the common room on thursday afternoon we had a confrontation about the whole dubstep and metal thing. I tried to be civilised and explain but eventually it just turned into "Metal is shit" etc etc.. So I guess thats why im posting it here because I wasn't able to present the case in this way (Well this article so far is over a 1000 words and wtf is this a debate?!? lol)
I think the problem is, that there are much more dubstep fans in the sixth form than metal fans, so already out numbered and on the back foot so to speak but usually in the afternoons when there is barely anyone in, and a couple of friends and I have a free period we usually get chance to play metal. But the amount of grim faces we get, even from staff members of the sixth form is quite funny. I don't know what there stance on dubstep would be but I'd probably guess they'd prefer dubstep on the grounds of "It's just horrible noise" im really getting tired of that excuse because it's really not valid, if someone was to expand on it then I'd happily listen. Another problem is probably the ignorance of everyone and myself included, im not trying to sound like the good guy here because all of us are slightly ignorant to music we don't like, but can't you blame me if I have to listen to dubstep for like an hour, then when I get my chance to plug in my own iPod I get it instantly taken out and throw back at me because some other dubstep fan didn't like metal. Surely dubstep fans you can sympathise with me and say thats not fair? Seems I just had to their music!
Here is my addition to the original post (Updated 25th February 2009):
Okay so I've got over 20 comments on this post and expected like 5 at the max. This article is on page three of google and I didn't even do anything special to get this article that much notice. I've been getting alot of comments recently about similar points (Which I thank anyone who has posted one) This article was just literally a half rant about how music taste clashes at our common room. I don't like dubstep obviously, but I've managed to piss off alot of people, which I guess I can't say was my intention when I submitted this article but it happened and im not particularly bothered.
First off all I removed a comment about electronic music not being music at all. I aplogise to everyone, as I offended alot of people I was annoyed that day (Not just about dubstep as that would be just plain said) but about other things and shouldn't of attacked like that. Sorry dubstep fans <3 but continue reading on to hear my comments on your opionions on other parts of the article I posted
Let me try and go from the top to all your comments and points you made and reply to them:
The Electric Guitar is old fashioned
Alright I admit it. Yes it is. Electronic technology now is way ahead of the guitar and other instruments but this doesn't make the guitar obselete. Some people like the old style instruments
You are a ignorant bitch:
Thanks, alot of you have called me ignorant, thats fine it's your opinion, the point seems to get across to seems the majority of commenters are Dubstep fans. But I'll think you'll find that some dubstep fans are ignorant towards metal and other types of music. So you know im no worse than many other people out there
You are a nerd have no life so you just post pathetic arguments all day:
First off this was never meant to be an argument it was just some half rant that I formed one wednesday evening if it was an argument then I would actually of taken it seriously. Second have you had a look at the other content I post here? This is my blog where I post loads of things. I'll show you:
In total there are five posts catergories as rants:
http://www.james-blogs.com/category/rants/
Meanwhile my blog also is a place where I post tutorials on website development and I have currently just over 25 tutorials:
http://www.james-blogs.com/category/tutorials/
The ratio for tutorials to rants is just about 5:1. So it shows what I spend alot of time on. Not posting "pathetic" rants but put it that way. I also post much more stuff but tutorials alone, kind of debunk this claim. Sorry to go all nerdy on explaining it, but it needed to be shown to you all.
I spin dubstep, but also like to play metal
Let me end one of the points that keeps trailing on. I have no problem with the person who likes dubstep lets get that out right now, I simply hate the genre not the person. It's good that people who like dubstep also like other types of music, metal included. I have no problem with it. I only get annoyed when people who like dubstep when they call metal and other music genre's "shit" "crap" etc. And to be honest this post started when most of the dubstep fans in our common room kept constantly turning off our music after we have been subjected to their music for the past 30 mins and calling crap etc. A little unfair, and if you had this done to you you wouldn't like it, would you? Overtime I've gotten use to dubstep in the common room but thats not to say I like it. But hopefully you can understand one persons annoyance over that.
Your are Elitist
This was one of the few comments that actually got to me personally. As when people reply I like to be constructive and not start slagging match, be civilised etc, you can call me names such as emo, pussy gay whatever but this it just makes me half not bother about replying to your comment seriously, because hey im making the effort to present my case to you. But none the less I got called Elitist. I am no way Elitist I grew up in a typical family until I was like 5 when my parents split up, but not that changed anything, I went to normal state schools and would prefer them to Private schools any day! Personally, I don't like private schools as I think buying a better education has serious problems and I would go as far to say we should get rid of Private Schools (But im not going to into that). In actual fact I study Socialogy at A Level and we covered Education and look at indepth of Secondary Modern schools and private schools. By the end of it I hated private schools more than ever!
Well thats my little addition to the comments I've been getting recently. Sorry I didn't post it in actual comment but in total thats about 500 words, so it would be one long ass comment to read! And for a heads up if you read from top to bottom you've just read over 2000 words, sorry if I wasted your time, but thanks for reading the article fully.

Ah, your right about this music, it's quite horrible. But only because you don't know the good artists. I have an ass load of stuff similar to this and I gangsta' lean to it all the time foo'.
To get the good stuff, head over to http://ocremix.org - yeah it's a video game remix site, but the shit's hot!
sorry I'm siding with those you hate on this James, but I honestly can't listen to metal for a second. It makes me need church.

I don't really mind if you hate metal, it's basically the whole issue off metal although being hated should be regarded as music (Well more regarded as music than dubstep anyway)

most of dubstep's pretty boring but anyone who uses the "real instruments" argument in this day and age is a complete arsecandle. and if you like "only" metal or "only" dubstep or "only" free-jazz or "only" any one thing then you're narrow-minded too. there's fucking good music and there's fucking bad music and no genre has any monopoly on either. obviously, you only started high school so maybe you can be forgiven for being such an ignorant twat, hey. but right now you're hitting all the "i'm a total idiot" buttons. so, learn to listen, and more importantly, learn to not parade your 30 seconds of ignorance in public.
James

I am most certainly not a metal only person, granted it is my favorite type of music genre, but I guess the article above really doesn't show anything else, after all it all started after I got typing about the daily debate we have in the common room about what music is put on, And how Metal is completly shunned even though everyone else that likes metal has to listen to there stuff, and they we get denied when we try
I can tell you that I play the guitar, so not only do I play metal, I also play blues, I love blues songs and yes I do play heavy songs, but I also like playing scales and cords on the guitar, I love all of that. My music taste although being as some people put it as "god awful" and still except or musics as we are all different. But I just had to get the whole dubstep issue out there.
Yes this article maybe Narrow Minded and ignorant, but in the end it's based on something thats always happening in at college in the common room. And there's prently of ignorance in my college over metal.
Hope you can see now that im not so ignorant after all.

hahaha, i love metal. okay possibly a "deathcore" fag, but bands like whitechapel, suicide silence etc etc.
however, i produce dubstep.
And no it isnt a "random pile of shit" neither is metal.
you need to understand metal to like it, as is you need to understand dubstep to like it.
i go to college also, me and my mates bring is speakers or use our cars, we play what we want and everyone else can fuck off. stop being a pussy and do what you want.
i want to to listen to whitechapel then i will, i want to listen to caspa and rusko (dubstep) i will, i want to listen to dr. dre then i will.
although RnB is utter shite ill agree with you there.
p.s i play guitar too haha.
i just got bored of metal after a while and most of it sounded the same and too many people around my area wanted to be "metal as fuck" and it just got embarassing.

You sound like the most safest person that listens to dubstep ever, and when you said Whitechapel and Suicide Silence you defiantly made my day, those are two mighty epic bands.
I've listened to dubstep and I really can't get into it, im sorry but thats how it is, to me it's just noise. But then again people that critise metal say just the same thing so it's really just a massive battle with blood being splatted anywhere.
Don't get me wrong Dubstep although I hate, I accept it. I mean I listen to it everyday in our common room because someones got it playing when I walk in, so maybe one day I'll like it, but Im doubtful.
Thanks for sharing your views though and don't worry about swearing, swearing is acceptable if it's used in context which it is in your post.

You're an ignorant douchebag. Just because electronic music isn't made with analog instruments that require technical skill to operate doesn't mean that it takes any less creative effort to produce. And FYI a synthesizer does (believe it or not) require quite a bit of practice to learn to operate property. Just because it's accessible doesn't make it any less worthy to be called music then "metal." People love electronic music because with such a huge variety of sounds available you can create so many more feeling then you can with just a guitar, bass and drums. Learn to accept that your music is outdated (Every possible chord combination has been played before) and that eventually everyone will be tired of hearing "GWWWWWEEHEHHOWW GWWWWWWHOW GWWWHWHHOWHWOW" and turn to more progressive (Yes, I hate that term, but whatever), electronic sounds. The robots are coming bruv, and eventually all your music will be is a nostalgic memory of a past time where musical elitists put down electronic music because they can't get their heads around anything other then "GWWWWWEEHEHHOWW GWWWWWWHOW GWWWHWHHOWHWOW"
James

Im glad people are still reading this post! It must of got to a few people (Never thought it would to be honest but anyway)
Ha ha ha "GWWWHWHHOWHWOW" Awww man you made my day, thats the best way anyones put a guitar in words. Seriously im going to be smiling about that one through out the day today so thanks for that xD
I'll agree to a extent on your view on the guitar, chords are boring, yes they get repetive and make the same sound. It's the first thing I learnt and yeah they suck. But a guitar is certainly not outdated and you can create a whole lot more from just "GWWWWWEEHEHHOWW" example for electric guitars you can have pedals which can create additional distortion and add in all sorts of noises to your guitar.
Artifical harmonics as well (Pinch Harmonics) they are sounds you create by your thumb and pick hitting the string at the same time so you get the scream effect. You can do lots of additional sounds with a guitar as well, you just need to know how.

Hey let's end this plain and simple i personally create/ spin Dubstep i would also like to say metal is a great genre along with Dub. I do agree that it may appear easy to make Dubstep when in fact it is just as hard as metal if you take a look at the programs required to make it no average Joe-smo can make music on them. Same goes for metal. Music is music only those with the skill can make good music.

Are you upset that no one listens to metal anymore? No surprise, its written by a bunch of geeks who are afriad of showers and whose fathers didnt pay them enough attention.
Actually, I dont hate metal, its just dated as hell, like several decades dated. Like Godhead was hinting at - i could pick up a guitar, but doesnt mean it will be good music coming from the amp, lol.

I don't think you realize the complexities behind good production for music like dubstep, just like anyone can write a song on guitar... anyone can make a track, won't make it good.
There is alot of logic behind the production values behind genres such as dubstep/drumnbass/breaks.
I love metal too, but i'm a dj also, and anybody who dismisses a form of music just cause it 'CAN' but not always 'IS' made on a computer is a tit.
Someone could download the program 'Reason' and make a tune that you might think is good, but to other producers they'd know straight off the bat it was made on Reason.
People record their own loops, their own samples, so it's just as viable as any other kind of music.

Yeah I listened to metal when I was a spotty teenager too, but since then I've grown up a little, and my tastes have broadened! To dismiss music purely because its created on computers is unbelievably narrow minded: all music is soundwaves that hit the ear, so it is irrelevant how it was created. There is only so many combinations of accoustic instrument sounds (and notes that they play) that can be written. Whereas, computer generated music multiplys the amount of combinations that there can be, by a near infinate amount! wikipedia says that dubstep 'is distinguished by its dark mood' - WHAT A LOAD OF! Iv got loads of tracks that are upbeat, and if you wanna get technical, MAJOR!
In answer to one of your reply's about 'for electric guitars you can have pedals which can create additional distortion and add in all sorts of noises to your guitar' how do you think they work dipshit! They can create many different varriations of the guitar sound that is played into them, but they cant create a mean subbass that, when played out of "a real set of speakers" eg. Function 1, will pleasure you girlfriend, just by her sitting on the vibrating floor! But beings as you have the spare time to come up with this pathetic, pointless (literaly) rant, you clearly dont have a girfriend!
Dubstep by its very definition has its roots in dub, which is one of the most soulful genres around. You're listening to the wrong stuff mate!
yea that clip thats on wikipedia wasn't all that, but thats like us playing fightstar and saying 'metals shit!' you better do your homework before you mouth off about a genre you have pigeonholed! you dont like the chavs doing that to you, do you! EMO!!

Bleh, I managed to piss off many people. I didn't even mean to but oh well fun times. Im actually wondering where all of you lot came to this page from, like referral or whatever. I seem to bring out the angry side of people here
I iz sorry. Tbh I don't regret what I put here, this is my blog I post my thoughts and other things here, my space my rules. I maybe narrow minded on Dubstep. I don't like it thats probably the problem.
I love your evaluation of me posting this means I don't have a girlfriend. You are correct I don't have one, but then again, it means nothing, trying to judging me on my personality from simple text paragraphs isn't clever. Yes I have spare time and my blog is one of the spare time activies. And yeah im on a computer alot probably too much so yeah think what you want if it makes you feel better
Thanks for giving me 1 more pageview to my blog, I am very grateful for the statistic

And thanks for the end comment of EMO. I get that quite alot and im used to it, I'd try and explain that im not an emo but then again you claim to already know me so I won't bother. Long hair <3
Thanks again <3 and sorry to anyone else that I haven't replied to, I can't always reply as and this might shock Womra but I also do other things that don't resolved around my blog xD
Oh and btw plenty of dubstep lovers basically reverse what I've said and are narrow minded about metal. So what do you expect from someone who loves metal. Two way system!

Well I have alot longer hair than u!
its just the swept over 1 eye bit that makes me think ur an emo! oh and i found it on google, bout page 3 or 4! and if ur a dubstep lover like myself the title "Dubstep - Whats that all about?" is gunna make u read it! (good advertising)
I did like metal, but like i have already said, there is only so much u can do with it! I'm grade 5 clarinet, grade 4 saxaphone, i can play bass and guitar to a perfoming standard. And after all these years of a producing/performing background, and listening to all genres of different varietys, i have found myself fascinated and devoted to this genre u have grown to hate. I hope that 1 day a new and boundryless genre sweeps u off ur feet!
Btw - the leave a reply part of ur webpage was a good idea!
Good Day Sir!!!

Well im glad you replied back, see despite the hate that's on this page I still try and comment. Impressive music talents, very diverse and unique and hey you got into dubstep and since then have been fascinated by it, fair enough, im similar excect I listen to rock then progressed into heavy rock and the metal it's a lovely cycle.
Yeah my avatar may seem Emo but really im not, I don't wear eye liner or tight jeans then only one thing that possibly makes me 1% emo is that I use straightners on my hair but thats because my hair is curly naturally. But yeah looks can be deceptive.
Im glad you checked out my blog, and I always encourage people to reply on anything I post, what would be the point otherwise. Me on my one posting stuff that no one will talk about after, now thats pathetic.
Again thanks for coming by

This is silly! first off bands like Suicide Silence and Whitechapel are not in way "epic". It's in what you like. I love all kinds of Metal music. for the past 10 years I've been playing in em and been into it since my early teens. I for one tho like more music, than just metal. being a fan of dubstep, yes!, I do agree a lot of it is noise, but thats what I think of Suicide Silence and the rest of these new Death act's. nothing but kids that learned how to do blasts beats and attack the strings on their guitars. no true music writing talent. if you weed out the good ones, you'll def find some really amazing shit. seeing that this dude is only into METAL, he def wouldnt care that Dubstep follows a really traditional process that could easily be considered a homage to some oldskool Electronic music.
I havent enjoyed Metal at all since the latest Veil of Maya and the latest Origin. as for Dubstep?... I know a shitload of metal heads who enjoy that shit. It's got that dark and real heavy feel.

Hehe...so because a piece of music isn't played on real instruments, there's somehow less talent involved in the composing of it compared to a piece that is played on real instruments? You're a fool.
I'd love to see people like you write electronic music...you'd get so lost in having to arrange the multiple layers of sound/instruments.
Stick to waving your hand up and down a guitar and grunting into a microphone - atleast you can do that.

Anyone here realize that in the 60's some people hated the electric guitar. Im sure some people said "its not even music" at the time. Im sure there were people who were talking about how anyone can make music with an electric guitar, cause its just noise (the distortion)
those of you who are saying "computer" music is not real music......im sorry to say, but you are being left in the dust by advancing technology.
really what it comes down to is that you like what your used to hearing. some things are new, and some people cant accept new things.

i don't think you should have opinions on music as a whole, its obvious that you only follow one genre, maybe cos its fashionable to be rebelious or ur searchin for somewhere to belong, you do not want to be considered the norm - fair play but its these same things that should make you think twice b4 trashin another genre. You are not a music lover you are a genre lover plain and simple.
If you have any respect for music as a whole you would look to the elements within music to draw references - if this was flipped round i very much doubt you would be impressed with these kind of closed minded statements.
I love Dubstep/Metal/Jazz/World Music/Drum n Bass/Hip Hop even some psych. I don't have to love everything in these genres but i know if i look properly and take the time i will surely find some stuff that will blow my mind.
Maybe this is something you should consider, don't feel threatened by the new group of kids in a common room interested in a new form of dance music. Get to know...Its just plain silly.

I've got an idea. Why not just listen to metal through your earphones?
At the end of the day, if the majority of people want to listen to dubstep, then the majority vote wins, simple as. Just like we have an election for prime minister, the majority vote wins. You shouldn't make the majority "suffer" because the minority wants to mosh.
Before you say I'm a metal "basher", I like heavy music. Not as heavy as the bollocks bands people have been writing on here, but I love Metallica and absolutely adore Dream Theater. John Petrucci is a maniac and Mike Portnoy should be dead by now.
Fortunately though, I've become addicted to Dubstep and I can think of nothing better than throwing down some shapes and soldiering to some absolute wobbers. My iPod should be called a DubPod!
You argue that it's just noise, well it is, ridiculous noise. Bass lines running though you where the only outcome is you bopping all the way home. Well how would you defend people screaming down a microphone? That is just noise. They can't obviously sing and it just ruins the potentially good riffs you struggle to hear in the background.
You need to climb out of this metal hole you've got yourself into. You'll end up like one of them 40+ guys you see with a lame job, a girl who’s more of a man than they are, all because they've moshed too many brain cells out.
Oh, and you're definitely an emo. Just the way you write, using shitty things like XD and <3, only willy sniffers do that. And invest in some English lessons, your grammar is appalling.

Sadly even though I have my own iPod with headphones if I tried to listen to my own music in the common room at sixth form it would be drowned out by dubstep.
Look this is my blog where I post various things. In actual fact I posted this as sort of a way to let of steam. Not to create some internet war/argument, but looks like everyone here has decided to make it into one so what can you do. I think it's fair to say I've been very accepting of the name calling that I've had thrown at me, judgement of my personality etc but not once have I called anyone a name back.
You should contact iPod about your "DubPod" it would most defiantly catch on lol.
See some people have gotten it into there heads that im being some defender of the metal music genre, while it may seem that way. I just posted this one wednesday evening to let of some steam and share it with others. But no a person can't do this anymore without being verbally destroyed. It's sad really and to be honest if im just going to get continues hate im just going to remove this article (Which yeah you all will be glad about) but Im getting really annoyed with the same points all the time and im fed of it really, and you may be thinking why did you post this in the first place then. Well because I simply stated my opinion and just let of some steam, but now apparently this is some music war.
And again I replied to someone who said the similar thing about being me Emo.
"Oh, and you're definitely an emo. Just the way you write, using shitty things like XD and <3, only willy sniffers do that."
You claim to know my personality by one photo, this article and two commonly used internet characters "xD" and "<3" sorry but you fail there.
But hey at least you structured your comment and stated why you said those things, which I thank you for. Because comments like "Ur a wasteman" im just going to ignore.

you can't say that about dupstep whilst not taking time to fully research the topic to be disscussed. And anyway, the 'dubstep' in the sixth form is piss-poor. hence why i don't roll in there. stupid chavs with their mainstream shit.

Most music lovers do not stick to one genre. I for example listen to dubstep, grime, d'n'b, roots reggae, dancehall, ska, various forms of rock, metal and hip-hop. My honest advice for you is to listen to all kinds of music, you never know, you may grow to find something you enjoy even more than metal.
