I've never really talked about Formula 1 much here, but I've been a F1 lover since I was like five. To me F1 is one of those areas which I can talk about for hours and can rattle off loads of information about anything to do with the sport, but recently the media seemed to have grasped onto the fact that the new F1 seasons is doomed already and how the first race was boring. Sometimes I really think the media put F1 in a bad light, but thats just me. Anyway I decided to post my thoughts on why the F1 season isn't "doomed"
Well I'll start with the first race that started this whole arguement. The first F1 race to kick off the season was of course the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix and while I'll agree with the opinion of "it wasn't the most exciting race" it was still the first F1 race to kick off the season so for any F1 fan that was exciting enough. I think everyone thats slating the new F1 season has gotten too focused on the first race, sure it wasn't very exciting, but then again Bahrain is a fairly new race to the track list and hasn't really got a reputation to be exciting. Then we've got the whole point of there's no overtaking because of how the cars are designed and how the aerodynamics of the car greatly affect the car behind attempting to overtake, well yes, the design of Formula 1 cars does have some impact on overtaking, but again Bahrain isn't the widest track in the world and there aren't many overtaking spots so what do you expect?
At the time of writing this two more races have been completed, the Qantas Australian Grand Prix and the Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix both which are wider tracks and have a better reputation for a more exciting race, what a suprise, turns out there was overtaking! So the Aerodynamics of the cars can't be that bad, considering we saw one Lewis Hamilton taking several places in both Australia and Malaysia and all these people saying "a race will be exciting only if it rains" while it did rain in Australia it rained slightly and for a short period of time, but did we see any rain in Malaysia? We did for the qualifying session, but for the race nothing and yet I'd say it was a decent race. Such a lame point to make. Yes weather conditions can make a race more exciting, but if you hang on the fact of the weather making a race exciting then your watching the wrong sport.
I've been reading a lot of some people's ideas to make F1 more "exciting" and most of them I think are completly rubbish and wouldn't do anything. One that I've seen pop up is mandatory pit stops making cars pit more. Since theirs no re-fueling anymore the pit stops only consist of changing tyre's and if needed tweaking the front wing. To be honest I think the no re-fueling shows who's got their car working and their driving skill. All cars will be heavy at the beginning of the race so it's not like the front runners can go sprinting off and put it in twelve fast laps anymore making the race more competitive and keeping the race open to the racers in the top six positions or so. Though really the person who looked good in qualifying is obviously going to look good for a podium. So why force pit stops, think it through..
One point I do agree with is people suggesting to bring back KERS. KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) was around in 2009 and involved being able to turn energy wasted under breaking into additional power stored in a battery creating an extra 50 BHP. The driver could then press the KERS button to use additional power and get a significant boost, particularly in straight lines and in slip streams. Really McLaren and Ferrari were the only teams that stuck with it and used it to create an advantage on track though it was open to all teams to use. But I say bring it back, because this would quiet the people complaining about no overtaking. With KERS on the scene this will allow drivers to overcome the aerodynamic limitations that can sometimes prevent overtaking. F1 is apparently boring, KERS is one of those options to mix it up. Sort it out FIA. While all teams this year agreed to not use the KERS system, KERS itself has not been banned, only a gentlements agreement so to speak between all the F1 teams prevents KERS being used. I'd love to see it revived next year or even mid season this year. Though im not sure if it could be implemented into cars during a season, seems the cars have been designed to a specification and it would be difficult to implement, but we'll see!
In the end we also have to remember that F1 isn't always about overtaking and being exciting, at the end of the day it's a spectator sport where really you watch, you don't control, so you either have to except that some races will be less exciting and not get hung up on the fact, or find a new sport to watch. Simplez. I think a lot of people have forgot about the whole 'don't judge a cover by it's book' lesson, except here it's don't judge an F1 season by the first race because you'll probably end up looking like a fool, which to anyone who did, you are.
Well thats a rant from a massive F1 fan who loves the sport! Looking forward to the next race at China!
