Fixing the ttf-mscorefonts package in Ubuntu 9.10

post-thumb

Ubuntu 9.10 since it's release has caused quite a storm in the linux community both good and bad. While Ubuntu 9.10 is the latest and greatest release of the Linux distro there have been a few slight issues with Ubuntu 9.10. One of the problems I've had with the Ubuntu 9.10 is with a package called mscorefonts. This package contains Windows fonts such as Arial and Impact that are used in such programs such as Wine, the Windows compatibility layer that allows you to install and run windows applications in Ubuntu. Problem is a lot of people have had problems with this package not being able to obtain the fonts from the download mirrors provided. Read more to fix this problem.

Have you upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala)?

post-thumb

If your someone who doesn't always use Windows then chances are your a Linux user too. Linux with it's many distrubutions and open source lovelyness has recently seen the popular distribution Ubuntu hit the 9.10 mark with it's latest release called Karmic Koala! I've only been using Ubuntu since 9.04 and only for a few months but Im finding it really fun and a great alternative to Windows, especically when Windows is in one of those 'doze' moods and decides to do everything but the command you give it. Here's my upgrade experience and my overall opinion on the new release

Well I haven't blogged in a while and thats because I've been busy with personal things, but because this blogs about everything but myself here's my latest happening in a blog post. Im sure you've all heard about Windows 7, Microsoft's brand new operating system which has been through it's BETA and Release Candidate stages and is due to be released to the public on 22nd October, but because of my college and it's partnership with Microsoft Software Development Network and the MSDN Academic Alliance. I was able to get my hands on a genuine copy of Windows 7 Professional and had some time to install it onto my Compaq Presario Laptop. So after slightly annoying people with "OMG I HAS WINDOWS 7 PROFESSIONAL" I decided to show you guys a machine running Windows 7 Professional that isn't the BETA, RC1 or RC2.

Why I use the Windows Classic Theme in Windows XP

post-thumb

Well recently my posts have been about computers and technology, and this one is no different, I've mainly been playing around with hardware and tech stuff recently so I thought I'd get a trend going. Over time of using Windows XP I've slowly started to really hate the Windows XP Theme you know the theme where you have a big blue task bar with a green start button, since Windows 95 the taskbar really hasn't changed much but I've always thought it was fine as it is, so why fix something which is not broken, but recently I've gone back to the classic theme of windows that you would find as default in Windows 95, 98 or 2000. Maybe it was just some slow realisation but I honestly have switched back to Windows Classic on Windows XP

The benefits of creating a home network

post-thumb

If you have more than one computer in your house have you ever considered creating a network to connect them to each other? So each can communicate, share devices attached by local ports or even share simple files or applications. I hadn't really considered setting up a network until I got a laptop, but recently I found myself using my laptop and wanting to use devices such as printer, but of course these are connected to my PC! I could simply plug the USB into the back of my laptop but what if I was doing work downstairs on the sofa on my laptop and I need to print something? Sure like I said I could walk upstairs and plug the printer USB into the back of my laptop. But that would mean I would be forever walking around with my laptop and having to plug things in and out when a laptop is a portable computer! Kind of defeats the object of having one. But to solve this I've created a small home network between my PC and Laptop.
